Digital Extremes has confirmed that Soulframe's previously invitation-based alpha will become accessible to all players on Friday, November 6. The announcement was made during the studio's Devstream 18 broadcast and later shared through the game's official website.

The upcoming access phase, officially named Open Preludes, will remove the previous invitation restrictions. Interested players will simply need to register an account through the Soulframe website and install Digital Extremes' dedicated game launcher to start playing. No access code or invitation key will be required. However, the studio has confirmed that its existing paid Founders program will continue operating under the same conditions after public access becomes available.

Soulframe will remain exclusive to PC, with players accessing the game through its independent launcher rather than Steam. Although the game already has a Steam store listing, its release status there still shows as coming soon. Before this announcement, access had been restricted to selected players since 2023, meaning the fantasy action RPG has spent approximately two to three years in a closed testing phase.

What new players will find

Players joining through Open Preludes should understand that Soulframe is still an ongoing development project rather than a finished release. Creative director Geoff Crookes has previously explained that the current playable version represents only the basic framework of what the completed game is intended to become. Newcomers can also explore the first 16 Preludes chapters to learn more about the game's setting, important characters, and core mechanics. Within Soulframe, its narrative-driven missions are known as Fables.

The transition to open access also comes shortly before another significant development milestone. The next chapter, Preludes 17: Verse of the Veilands, is planned for release later in November, although Digital Extremes has not provided a specific launch date. This update is expected to introduce major changes to the game's opening experience and overall progression structure. Lead designer Scott McGregor described the upcoming adjustments as one of the most substantial and dramatic structural overhauls the team has made in quite some time.

Several gameplay additions will also arrive with the update. Players will gain access to mounts, including the ability to raise an Omen wolfpup until it develops into a fully grown wolf that can be used for transportation. Another addition is a new Pact associated with the hostile Ode faction. This hunter-focused enemy group uses weapons and equipment such as spike traps and bolas, although the final name of the Pact has not yet been confirmed.

Digital Extremes is also developing a regional corruption mechanic that allows the Ode to drain the natural environment of Midrath. As players work to cleanse affected territories, environmental conditions, world events, and available rewards will change accordingly. Crookes acknowledged that this system could make the world appear considerably darker and more threatening at first, which contrasts with the welcoming and relaxing atmosphere that many early testers previously appreciated.
