Bungie has revealed an updated development roadmap for Destiny 2, with the studio's first major objective focused on restoring all previously removed content to the game.

In its October Community Update, published by Bungie's Josh Dean, the developer explained that the restoration project will include campaign missions, expansion storylines, Raids, destinations, and various other gameplay experiences. The initiative is currently in the pre-production phase, with full production scheduled to begin in February 2027. Bungie expects the entire process to require approximately 12 months, meaning some of the returning content may not become available until 2028. However, the studio has not announced an official launch date.

Bungie explained in its announcement that Destiny has been on an extensive journey for more than ten years, and that players should have access to the franchise's complete experience through the platforms and versions they use today.

The plan reverses a year of bad news

The latest announcement represents a significant change from Bungie's earlier plans for Destiny 2. Earlier this year, the studio scrapped its previously planned Shattered Cycle expansion and indicated that ongoing support for the game would conclude after its final June update, titled Monument of Triumph. However, Bungie changed its direction again in September, confirming that development efforts on the franchise would continue.

The newly announced content restoration initiative is the first major step toward rebuilding the game's future. It also signals a reversal of the Destiny Content Vault approach, which previously allowed Bungie to remove older activities, destinations, and other content from the live version of Destiny 2.

According to the community update, Josh Dean and Studio Head Poria Torkan want to make the franchise's complete storyline accessible again before shifting attention toward potential sequels or spin-off projects. Their priority is to give both returning players and newcomers an opportunity to experience the full history of Destiny.

Celebration, Legacy and the Menagerie

Beyond the content restoration project, Bungie's update also introduces two additional initiatives: a special event called "Destiny 2 Celebration" and a separate "Destiny Legacy" update. These plans are intended to extend the game's development roadmap beyond the release of Monument of Triumph. The Menagerie, a popular activity originally introduced during the 2019 Season of Opulence, has also been confirmed for a return, this time featuring additional rewards.

Bungie further revealed that a new progress-tracking bar is expected to appear in February. This feature may provide players with a clearer overview of the restoration project's targets, milestones, and overall development progress. Nevertheless, the studio has not yet shared specific details about the activities or features planned for the Celebration event and Destiny Legacy update.
